Project update and progress!

Hello to all our fantastic volunteers and project supporters.

The SolentBirds project continues to go from strength to strength with word spreading of our efforts across the Solent region. We are now closing in on 8000 records for the 2015/16 over wintering season which really is a fantastic start to our project data collection. To check out the spread of data have a look at our website

Thank you to all of you for your support and records, you are making a real difference to this project which will inform and guide habitat creation within our region moving forwards.

That said keep up the good work! lets smash our season target of 10,000!

With the successes to date discussion has now begun with the project sponsors to extend the project into a further season and also to include some novel data capture using the latest GPS technology… nothing firm yet but watch this space!

We hope you all have a good weekend…. Happy birding!

Best wishes

The New Year has been greeted with a fantastic number of records received, all thanks to our dedicated volunteers!

Over 5600 records have now been submitted and with three months left of this field season we are on track to achieve our project target of 10,000 records annually! The project will be running for three years so plenty of time for you to contribute to this important project.

Please keep up the excellent work and spread the word of the project. Remember it is possible to submit photos with your records, it all adds to the evidence base.

Richard Ford -Oystercatcher

One month since the release of the App and Website and records are soaring in! A big thank you to all of you that have been submitting your records. We greatly appreciate all of your time and efforts!

So far a total of 850 sightings have been recorded, capturing 48 different species. Trending species include the Black-headed Gull, Little Egret and Oystercatcher.

Remember that EVERY observation, even if there were no birds present at the time of recording, is a brilliant addition to the database and project.

Please continue to spread the word on this project so others can submit their records too.

Keep up the good work guys!

Happy birding!

App & Website published!!

Exciting news! The Solent Birds smartphone app for recording sightings of protected species around the Solent is now live!!! As is the new website! This is the Solents first purpose built app for bird recording and will be huge to this project and all other environmental initiatives in the region. All records are hugely important to the project, even a record when you see nothing as this shows that the birds are not present at a site which is rarely recorded.

Volunteer opportunities with @SolentBirds

We are now entering a critical phase in the project with the team increasingly busy on a number of tasks. Maps for all of the sites have been produced, past data has been analysed and the website and app are being polished ready for release in the 2 weeks.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to volunteer over the winter – we couldn’t do it without you! We’re very grateful to you for giving up your time. We are, however, still looking for more volunteers to help cover the Solent and record the wading birds and wildfowl. The study will involve:

  • understanding the importance of area for birds
  • looking for migration opportunities
  • and exploring how sites can be improved through better management.

In order to do this we need lots of keen birders to join those already signed up!

If this sounds like something you would like to get involved with, please email and fill out the volunteer form

We need YOU! Join us in making a difference in the Solent!
